Title: Rack it up! Post by: dguy on November 04, 2003, 10:31:43 am Were all '84 through '87 steering racks the same, or were there variations in the pinion ratio?
Title: Re:Rack it up! Post by: FieroBUZZ on November 04, 2003, 12:01:18 pm AFAIK, there are at least two. Can't tell you what year or how to id.
One is something like 2.5 turns lock to lock and the other 3 (numbers a guess). Trial and error may be the only way, I couldn't tell you how many turns it is on my own. Title: Re:Rack it up! I think you're right though--it's probably easiest just to count the number of turns from lock-to-lock. Title: Re:Rack it up! Post by: 34FieroGT on November 05, 2003, 02:46:33 pm Gary is right: there are two different racks available. A 3 turn lock-to-lock, and a 3.5 turn lock-to-lock version. AFAIK, the 3.0 unit was only found on GTs and the '84 Indy, but I'm not sure on the Indy... The 3.5 unit is found on all other models.

Any idea if there are casting numbers, or another means of identification other than counting the lock-to-lock turns? Title: Re:Rack it up! Post by: BootMachine on November 05, 2003, 04:33:34 pm Know what would be really neat...if you had a 3 quarter turn to lock wheel and a massive powersteering pump to handle the gearing.
That way you could keep both hands on the wheel at all times and just cross your arms for the full turn....would be cool for SoloII Title: Re:Rack it up!
