Title: Photo Radar??? Check it out! Post by: FieroDough on April 06, 2004, 04:08:43 pm Could be totaly unrelated, but here goes...
On Monday, i was driving on Huntclub Rd around noon... Police car tailing me.. All of a sudden, the light come on.. I had o idea what i did wrong.. Police officer comes to my door (really nice guy actually.. not a prick at all) and tells me I have a plate cover and that they are illegal. Even if it is completly clear.. Gave me a 72 hrs notice... Now today, (tuesday) i was driving on the 416, taking the 417 onramp heading east to blair, what do i notice on the side of the road hidden from the east bound traffic? A white van, idleing with a police officer in it. Some werd equipment on the dash... Is photo radar officially back online in Ontario? could this "sting" on plate covers be related? Hook me up with some info, Cheers! Eric Title: Re:Photo Radar??? Check it out! Post by: GoFast85 on April 07, 2004, 07:35:21 am Did he tell you the section of the highway act that you were breaking??

Post by: 2ML67 on April 07, 2004, 08:30:31 am Being a law abiding citizen I do not see a problem besides I live way down in the county where it wouldn't be worth the tax grabbing crooked goverment's time to use it down here. Keeping fingers crossed just in case.
Title: Re:Photo Radar??? Check it out! Post by: dguy on April 07, 2004, 09:19:28 am Did he tell you the section of the highway act that you were breaking?? From Eric's post it sounds as though the officer didn't, but here's a link to the relevant section of the Highway Traffic Act (http://www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/DBLaws/Statutes/English/90h08_e.htm#BK33). I find it hard to see how a clear plate cover could be construed as an obstruction/obscurement of a licence plate to be honest, unless it's one of those which acts as a lens and distorts the view of the plate from anything other than the "right" angle. On the other hand I suspect that the many blue- and smoke-tinted covers which I see on vehicles every day are easy targets with respect to obstruction/obscurement claims. Assuming that the officer with whom Eric is in contact regarding the C.A.R.R. idea is watching the forum, this would be a really nice time for he/she to step in and comment. ;D edited due to the fact that I apparently can't tell the difference between Eric & Dan Title: Re:Photo Radar??? I wouldn't worry about it Eric, if the same officer pulls you over explain to him how you clear plate is obstructing your plate. ;) As far as I know Photo Radar is not yet given the o.k. Althought the Liberal government are looking into it because it is a good revenu generator. :-\ Title: Re:Photo Radar??? Check it out! Post by: FieroDough on April 07, 2004, 09:44:09 am Well did some more snooping, that van WAS a photo radar! BUT! it was no issuing any "fines" it was there for "statistical" reasons. Ie: Test the effectiveness of the unti and potential revenue.
She is coming! Argh! don't get me wrong, I'm not looking for ways to speed, it most cases I never pass 110 on the 417.. but.. I look at it as hunter and hunted, you can't have all the cards in your favor. if they invested X amount of dollars on a system that has a flaw.. (can only take a picture of a clear, clean plate with no cover ect..) then they should invest to better the technology and not for the hunted to conform to them. it's like tying a bear to a tree because you fire arms can only reach so far. ??? Anyhow, my big concern is a like the friggen plate cover, I payed $20 bucks for the %$#@ thing.. Besides, the licence office charges you for your plate.. When it rusts and gets worn, they CHARGE you for a new one. I'm protecting my investment. Cheers! Eric Title: Re:Photo Radar??? Check it out! Stop and think for a moment, what the net outcome of this precious coffer feeder would be, were every driver in Ontario stick to the posted speed limits for a couple of months. Suddenly we have a government who is forking out extra to operate & maintain the photo radar units, but isn't receiving a single cent for their efforts. So now, a few months later, they're potentially in a worse position than when they started. ;D [/shit disturber mode] Quote don't get me wrong, I'm not looking for ways to speed, it most cases I never pass 110 on the 417.. but.. According to an MTO rep I spoke with about a year ago, it's at the OPP's vehement insistence, again claiming safety issues, that the multiple requests which the MTO receives each year for exemption from front-mounted licence plates, and/or the removal of a front plate requirement from the Highway Traffic Act are turned down. Say nothing for the fact that the remainder of the Canadian provinces & territories which have no front licence plate requirement, seem to manage just fine. Isn't it also ironic that many licence offices have ads posted which promote the sale of licence plate covers? ::) Title: Re:Photo Radar??? Check it out! Post by: FieroDough on April 07, 2004, 11:35:06 am Sweet!! if you can snag me an add showing the sale of clear plate covers with the licence plate I would appreciate that. more juicy stuff for my defence.
Cheers! Eric Title: Re:Photo Radar??? Check it out! Post by: aaron88 on April 07, 2004, 01:32:53 pm Just go into an MTO office and bring a camera. A lot of them sell the clear licence plate covers. They even display them on the wall.
