Title: Help
Post by: Kevin on May 11, 2004, 11:24:57 pm
Well I was on my way into work today going through the gears, turned a corner, tried to push into second and no dice, pulled over, shut down worked the gears and was able to get into 3,4,5 and R. First and second are impossible to get into you should see me take off in third lol I have never smelt my clutch before. I haven't had a chance to get a good look at things. The linkages seem to be working alright, it moves side to side alright its just up and down in 1 and 2 that it won't do. I had a quick look under the shifter and all looked good, but will do that again when it is light out. I will do that on Friday when I am off.
  Anyone have any ideas?
Just in case does anyone know where I could get an Isuzu 5 spd. cheap (of course)? Kevin

No ideas other than the clutch is good (for now) Linkage or tranny problems.

See if you can sift into 1st and 2nd from moving the levers on the transmission it's self.  If that doesn't work, disconect the linkages and try again. If that works then you know where to trace it back to.  Otherwise you're f*#$ed.

Like Aaron said.  If it shifts easily while off = clutch, no difference on or off somewhere more sinister.  Is it that bad cable that you drilled and lubed last year?

Try Rebel, he still has that 85 parter in his yard.  has an Isuzu in it.

With the car off, it will not shift into either gear. It will move over to it, but will just go into the notch and no further into it. When it is moving and I try this I can hear a high pitched "ting" sound like a gear rubbing, but it will not engage.
Friday is my next day off so I will go to it then, keep the ideas coming please and thanks. Kevin

On the Isuzu first and second gear share a shift fork, shaft and block one of these may have broken if this is the case the tranny might be rebuildable but most likely cheaper to just replace.

Well, I might suggest looking at your shift linkage at the tranny end. It's been a few months but I, when replacing my tranny, didn't replace the linkages properly, and it would not find 1st or 2nd. The is a ball that rolls in a slot moving the shifter shaft up & down. If that ball has jumped out of its slot, you will not find 1st or 2nd. If I remember correctly, just unbolt a linkage bracket  and make sure the ball is back in the slot, then re-tighted the bracket bolt.
Long winded explanation, but if you look for a ball & slot for and up/down shifter shaft, you'll understand....
