I have the original size 70 series on mine (195-70-14) I find they ride nice.  You can go larger up to 205 on the front and 215 on the back if you want to play with that. What size do you have on yours now?

The 60 or 70 refers to the sidewall.  A 70 series tire will be taller than an equivalent 60 series.  Most guys try to keep the overall tire size the same so as not to ruin instrument readings.  Therefore going to a 17  inch rim usually means going to a 40 series tire. (more rim less tire).

I don't think from stock 14's you'll get any significant lowering from tire alone.
Options are pretty much suspension changes.
cut springs
lowered springs
coilovers
dropped spindles/coilovers
