Title: Pinstripes?????
Post by: FieroBUZZ on June 05, 2005, 08:12:34 pm
Okay, now that you're here....  Anyone own a pinstriper or know where to get one?  Kevin, the god of Princess Auto, see one there?

I mean the kind to paint automotive pinstripes.  It's a small glass bottle which holds the paint.  The top has a wheel (different sizes fit in) that picks up the paint on the bottle side and wheels it onto the car body. It also may have an arm that is used to follow a spacing tape guide.   They do a decent job after a little practice.

I have decided to do a little lime green striping .     ;D  ;D

use vinyl striping instead.  That way you save time and can change the colour or pattern whenever you want.

Sounds like an excuse for a field trip. I had a quick look through my catalogue and didn't see one. What are you going to pinstripe?  Kevin

I painted my Beretta wheels a dark gunmetal/graphite colour.  Looks like it needs just a tiny touch to spruce it up.  I used that metalizer paint that leaves a texture, so tape is out.  I would use tape on the body as it is easy to use.

Looks like it needs just a tiny touch to spruce it up.  I thought a small lime stripe around the outer edge would do it.

wow; sounds like an exercise in agility....??? twisting and turning the pinstriper all around that wheel; would it help to set it up on a "turntable" of sorts?

But I agree that you prob want something for an accent.

The idea of a 'turntable' is a good one. Gary, when you find your pinstriper, take your wheels over to a tire machine, mount a wheel, attach/adjust your pinstriper, and step on the pedal!Presto!

why not just use some fine line tape to put the shape/design you want, then do it free hand?

actually I am serious; I have come up with that after trying to weld in circles. with something this big (and this shape!) just put a big piece of pipe thru it (clamped in a vice) and then get yourself nice and comfortable and turn the wheel as you need. Work at comfortable arms length etc.  It really pays off to do a bit of setup. Especially if you want to follow the 'spokes' in and out it makes it all easier.

This is what I mean.  Nice steady pinstriping hand, eh?

I had planned to just mount the wheel on the car and turn the wheel.

oh; I was picturing you going in and out along the edges of the spokes etc.
you'll want to play with the line thickness a bit I suppose.

Why don't you fabricate a guide to run around the edge of the wheel. It sounds like all you want is the correct spacing of the line. If you were to use your Garygrinder to hack out a piece of wood and got a quality artist's brush you should be able to make that line.   Kevin

Would you like me to try and rig something up for you? This sounds like fun. That quote was Dr McCoy from the episode Devil in the Dark when he was applying a "bandage " to the Horta. Can I hear a WOOO!
