Title: Foamy prestone
Post by: 2ML67 on July 11, 2006, 05:50:31 pm
Got this piece of crap 2.8 back in and running unfortunately it over heats with a thermostat in so I figured air lock and removed thermostat and ran for a while, took for a few short drives then let cool to instal a t-stat. well took off the cap and foam spewed out now that doesn't look very good I am thinking head gasket or some thing any ideas nicer than that to deal with. Any "chocolate milk" in the bottom of the oil pan and/or coolant being pushed past the radiator cap prematurely?

Oil is fine and pan is clean and its not losing prestone its just getting foamy and will over heat with a t-stat installed. Dan

Have you drilled the 'stat?  I always put a couple of small holes in to allow any air to travel thru the system.  Can you see the water moving in the rad?  I wonder if the w/pump is just spinning enough to froth the coolant and not to circulate it properly.

That was my next thought.  Slipping impeller or other pumping problem which can barely move coolant with the t-stat removed, and can't do squat with the t-stat in place.

Dan is this the same car you just did the timing chain on?

Yep same car looks like this one hasn't seen regular maintenance for a long time. Dan
