Title: Puzzle
Post by: dguy on August 10, 2006, 02:52:29 pm
3 men go into a motel. The man behind the desk said the room is $30, so each man paid $10 and went to the room.

A while later the man behind the desk realized the room was only $25, so he sent the bellboy to the 3 guys' room with $5.

On the way the bellboy couldn't figure out how to split $5 evenly bhetween 3 men, so he gave each man $1 and kept the other $2 for himself.

This meant that the 3 men each paid $9 for the room, which is a total of $27.  Add the $2 that the bellboy kept brings the total to $29.

Where is the other dollar?

Damn government accounting.  The trick is to follow the money.  $30 in the till.  Split that to $25 till and $5 bellboy, split again to $25 till, $1 (x3) to the guys, and $2 bellboy.  25+1+1+1+2=30    Tada!

Working backwards the other way is like trying to figure out why you're on the couch by reconstructing the argument with the wife   :D

Buzz, you've got this issue solved...

Now, do you think that you can give me pointers as to how to stop reconstructing the argument with the wife ?

I've been having nightmare and waking up with cold sweats ever since Rob posted his 87 GT for sales  ;)

Mind you, taking a ride in Stephane's car last week did not help reduce my adrenaline rush...

Add the $2 that the bellboy kept brings the total to $29.

That's the trick right there, smooth writing makes you forget about math class.  Don't forget your math!
