Title: Neat idea
Post by: Rebel on January 02, 2003, 10:38:44 pm
If you have the remote release, I've heard that it is quite easy for the bad
guy to pop your trunk open.  A stiff wire pushed between the driver's window
and the weather strip potentially can reach the switch … and they are in!

I don't have the rear window defrost in my Fiero and that provided a solution
to this security concern.  I bought the rear defrost switch and the two switch
trim piece and then hooked up the new switch in series with the existing trunk
release switch.  Now the bad guy has to push both switches at the same time in
order to open trunk - would be difficult to do, especially if the bad guy
didn't know that he had to push them both.

I also hooked up the lights of the rear defrost switch by running wires down
from the existing lights of the trunk release switch.  The dash looks exactly
as if my car had been delivered with the rear defrost.

Now the bonus!

The rear defrost switch is double acting.  I used the up position for the dual
switch trunk release and then figured out how to use the down position to
activate a new relay which in turn closes the circuit to activate my garage
door opener.

I had to wire into the remote garage door opener but found that to be easy by
simply paralleling the existing switch and running the 2 wires to the new
relay.  The car's 12v power, via the down position of the rear defrost switch,
is used to pick up the relay. The power for actually opening the garage door is
the same battery that existed in the door opener.  I hung the door opener box
under the dash on a wiring harness.

I think this mod is slick.   Clean, neat appearing, and works great.

Unfortunatly the bad guys do have a counter to this, called a brick, or a club type weapon, very effective on windows. But that sounds like a very cool mod, lucky for me I have the most effective anti-theft device installed, busted engine.
