Title: Eventfull day
Post by: 2ML67 on April 26, 2007, 06:13:19 pm
Started the day off with a short cruise on one of my favourite roads to see how the car handles with new suspension parts then had to be home by 11:00 am to meet with a guy bringing his Fiero down from Peterborough for some tranny work. Then off at noon to prep my latest purchase an 84 Fiero for transport. the car has been sitting in a nice heated garage for 4 years since it died, the story I got is it locked itself in park and would not start. The garage said it was major and would cost more than it was worth.
I got it home after removing one siezed caliper and found the column to be toast. Replaced the column, installed a new starter and she fired right up and seems to run just fine. Now all I need to do is replace the bad caliper and fix one small coolant leak I found and it should be driveable. The headlights work fine as well as all the other toys in the car, rust wise it is in very good shape with only a few small rusted areas to deal with.
Now here is where my nasty concience or how ever you spell it kicks in. Do I tell the guy I had his car that sat for four years running in just over an hour and give him the option of buying it back for what i paid plus a little for my work or do I keep quiet and keep the car. Afterall I only paid $200 for it plus the $60 it cost me to have it towed home. Dan

I would keep it, his loss. If he really wanted it he would have tried to have it fixed himself

Perhaps, but not everyone is comfortable taking a car apart.

Tough call, Dan.  Any feel for whether the guy would want the car back if it was running?

The whole time I was there he kept saying how he thought the engine was still good and that I should be able to get it running with all the spare parts I have. At no point did he say he would like me to fix it for him or want it back once it was running. He just wanted it out of his garage to make more room. Dan

In that case, I'd say keep & enjoy.   O0

If you don't want the car Dan, I think you should call and make the offer.  What can it hurt but  a few minutes of your time?  If you do want the car, he did sell it to you, it's yours.  Do what you want.

Talked to the previous owner and he is not interested in getting the car back but said he was not the least bit suprised that I was able to get it running.
Replaced the bad caliper, freed up the e-brake and fixed the coolant leak so now she is ready for the road and a safety check. Only thing let is to find a good seat as the drivers is no good. Like most other Fieros the passenger seat is near mint but the seats are those grey ones with the stripes that only the 84's used making them very hard to find. Might just change both seats with a set I found in the wreckers from an 85 GT. Dan

I believe those are the same seats that are in my parts car.  I haven't taken a look under the seat covers, but if the passenger seat is ok, would you like that Dan?

Cheers, Derek

The passenger seat has some wear marks...not sure if you'd still want it.

Cheers, Derek
