Title: Power Windows...to swap or not to swap
Post by: MacPhail on June 20, 2007, 06:55:32 pm
What do people think?  Is it worth it to swap the entire doors onto my car so that I can have power windows, or is it a really big hassle and simply one more thing to go wrong later on down the line?

I like power options, but sometimes, they can be more of a pain when they start to break.  And given how old the motors are, I'm sure that they'll need replacing sooner or later.

Cheers, Derek

I have done this a few times and yes it is a lot of work changine over to power windows not only is there the doors to deal with but also need to remove the dash and center console for the wiring portion of the job.
For me it is about one days work for you no insult intended Derek but it will most likely take you a few days possibly a week to do it. Dan

Are the glass and the dew strips good? Use the better door.  If you just do the passenger side then you can crank yours and run the far door electrically.

Note to self:  Things that take Dan 2 weeks, seem to take me 3 years.   :-[

No offence taken, Dan.  I figured it would be a bugger of a job for even someone as experienced as you.  And to answer your question, Gary, the dew wipes are no better and would need to be replaced.

I think I may not do the swapping of the doors.  Besides, with my luck, they motors will quit the day of a thunderstorm and I'll get soaked.  ;)  Rolling down the windows isn't that big a deal for me.

Just a note:  The front bumper, fenders, hood and trunk have been removed from the parts car.   O0  I still have to redo the roof, this time, without so much gunk along the front pillars so that it sits nice and flat.

Cheers, Derek

just to let you know, the windows are the slowest windows i think ive ever seen on a car.

so if i were you i wouldnt change them, its to much effort for something that is probably going to fail.

if your doors were broken then ya id change them, but they arent so leave them alone.

Personally I like to open the pasenger window often when I drive, so it's kind of nice to have power on that side, but  I do prefer manual on the drivers side.  So do a hybrid, it'll save you half the time. O0
