Title: Tire Recycling Fees
Post by: dguy on April 01, 2008, 12:19:45 pm
Caught this article (http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/story/2008/04/01/mcguinty-recycle.html) on CBC's web site just now, regarding a proposal from Queen's Park to implement a tire recycling fee.

Included in the article, is this paragraph:

Ontario is the only province in Canada without a tire recycling program since it killed an initiative in the 1990s that charged an extra $5 per tire. At the time, the money went into the general government coffers.

I'd have to go digging through my filing cabinet, but I'm damn near positive that each time I've replaced a tire in the last 5-7 years that there has been a $5 fee added to the tab to cover disposal of the old one.

Something doesn't add up here.   :-\   ???

Usually the garage getting rid of the old tire has to pay to do it.  They are just passing it on to you.

I can't remember (lots of other things too) if they really killed the other tax as it's probably hidden in the new tire cost.  Kind of like claiming the tax on gas is to keep up the roadways.

They always charge for disposal.  $3-$7 each, depending where you go.

Cheers.

I have no problem with that--not my point though.

I haven't been around as long as some, but IIRC there were no disposal fees prior to the provincial gov'ts disposal/recycling program.  Recycling program starts, a per tire disposal fee is collected...  Recycling program ends, tire disposal fee is still collected to this day.

Have the fees collected since then still been applied to disposal/recycling costs, or can they be found in the linings of various wallets?   ???

My buddy's dad owns a garage. He charges a disposal fee because it costs him money to get rid of the old tires. I think the fee that was canceled in the 1990's was added to the price when you bought new tires.
