Title: Small engine experts needed
Post by: FieroBUZZ on January 01, 2011, 11:41:20 am
I have a generator powered by a 10hp Tecumseh.  It is the loudest freaking thing I ever heard.  My ears still hurt from a 5 minute run.

Is there some sort of exhaust system or muffler that I can use rather than the OEM tiny can?

Advice welcome

Can you split the "muffler" in a non-destructive way, and pack it with exhaust fiberglass wadding?

Most of the more expensive generators have an insulated case. You could try building something like that.

If you don't find a bolt on solution I can make you a custom exhaust for the cost of the metal.  I need to run an exhaust experiment anyway.

That would be very nice, Aaron.  I figured on build an insulated box that I could use here at home.  I got the darn thing before the ice storm.  We dragged it from house to house running the sump pumps.  It's heavy and awkward.  I have it sitting on a small garden cart now, but the wheels aren't made to drag thru snow or mud.

I hoped to use it to run the little MIG welder I picked up., if I ever get a small tank to use with it.

Some solutions I ran across for varying sizes of generators ranged from a 45 gallon drum, a dug pit covered with planks and a long hose attached to a small generator.

Mine is a Devilbis 5000 with a 10hp Tecumseh. It's a bugger to pull at -40

p.s. ear still is ringing.  Gary
