Title: Cradle bushings - '86
Post by: ddroger on April 08, 2003, 10:36:23 am
I intend to make a set of solid cradle bushings and would like to borrow someone's as samples to use for taking measurements.

Does anyone have a set off the car?

Also - in the 'upper control arm" thread there was mention of these cradle mounts being hard to remove.  Is that true?

Can anyone chime in with a description of how its done?

Hi Don:
I have a set of aluminum bushings that I plan to install. You are welcome to borrow them.  If you are having them made up, I believe Eric will be wanting a set as well. Darrell Morse sells them for 100 US$ (+shipping and duty yada, yada).

As far as I know the suckers usually need to be burned out.  There have been a couple of old threads on Pennock's Forum and this seems to be the accepted way for most cars outside of the sun belt.  I believe you can cut them up a bit with a sawzall and get the remainder with a torch.

hi Don
have just gotten the front right corner all dissassembled; control arms all off but not all bushings out yet.  I have seen a recommendation about soaking the bushings overnite in Laquer thinner and then they virtually slide out, but haven't given that a try.  Yet, anyway.  The problem I see is that the bolt seizes inside the inner steel sleeve of the bushing.  I AM having a tough time with one rubber bushing and guess I am going out on the driveway to burn it out (some of it will do, then it is deteriorated enough to be driven out).
When I install my new poly ones I am going to drill them and install zerk fittings.  Another maintenance item.  That is the theory, anyway.

With the loan of Fierobuzz' bushings & advice from Fiero308, I think I'm on my way to making some SOLID CRADLE BUSHINGS.
Once I'm happy with the design I'll get a friend who has a small machine shop to price out sets & y'all can take it from there.

Depending on how easy they are to make, I may do some extra sets for sale myself; but its only a 24hr course.
