New clutch!

Hi all,

Well its time for a new clutch plate for my summer toy (86 SE Convertible).  Called the dealership and got the bad news (#1,500 - $2,000).  Now its time to do some homework before getting the work done.

The dealership suggested using an aftermarket clutch, and asked if I'd considered using a lighter flywheel.  

Any recommendations on sourcing a good clutch plate?  

And what would a lighter flywheel do for me as far as the behaviour of the car?

I think that GM rates it as a 10 hour job.  The clutch kit in a parts store is about 180.00.  So most of the rest of the quote is the garage.  You may check with the guys to see if anyone has had a mechanic do one lately.  The more often you do it, the easier it becomes.

A lighter flywheel means less weight to start spinning therefore a quicker to rev.  I don't think a 2.8 really benefits enough to warrant the expense. (just me).

If by aftermarket they mean a parts store, there are several stock numbers available.  I believe at least one is the same clutch GM gives you without the GM sticker.

If you mean heavy duty, probably Centerforce dual friction is what they had in mind.  

You may be able to adapt a clutch for heavier usage.  Probably not a good choice of words.  Ottawa Clutch has made clutches for the import crowd by using a stock clutch and bonding a different compound to it.  Definately worth a phone call to inquire if they can build a friction plate for you.

why do you want a stronger clutch? I am using a ram clutch from canadian tire, made for the getrag. 2.8L, never slips. Just get new everything. New pressure plate new clutch (duh) and new release bearing.

Not so much a hard job as a tedious one. Droping the engine / cradle is the best /fastest way to go. Have them inspect the clutch for thoroughly beffore slapping her back together! as a matter of fact, get a new one with the new bushings from www.rodneydickman.com ! cheap insurance.

But unless you have big mods to the engine... IE mods that require a different computer.. stock clutch is good enough. Anything with a higher friction, will probably just wear faster and kill your flywheel for no performance gain. MAy even loose some drivebility. (clutch chatter ect.. )

BTW: Crappy tire says they do it for 800.00.. (but.. it's crappy tire.. )

Petro can on Greenbank and fallowfield qouted me just this spring 850.00 so there are people that can do it cheaper the question is . well you know what the question is and yes cheaper is sometimes better.

That reminds me.  I ran into a tech at Crappy Tire in Kanata.  Can't recall his name, Bill?? Older guy, you could ask them there.  He had done a complete motor rebuild last winter and seemed to know his way around the Fiero.

If they'll do it for 800.00 or so then I would ask for him specifically.  May be good deal.  I think 800.00 is about the best you'll do.  They'll likely remove the tranny side wheel weel etc and just pull the engine apart enough to do the clutch.  I think that's the GM procedure anyway.

YOU ARE SUPPOSED to resurface the flywheel (and shim).

Wow that's expensive i got my Gt done 3 months ago a rebuilt 4spd & a new clutch for $2300.
