It seems painfully obvious that we love our cars, but have no (very few) decent pics to show them off.

One of the things we should plan to do when the weather gets nice is to have some photos done.  These can be single small group or all we can get together.  We can do it ourselves or get a pro.  There are a few really good photographers on some of the other boards.  Of course we can do it free.  Afro

To this end, it would be nice if everybody has a good think about locations.  I'm sure we all know of someplace that would be good.  The following factors should be important.

Background

There should be a minimum of distractions to take away from the car.  I mean exposed power lines, tree stumps, signage, and other things which may seem to 'grow' out of your car in the final picture.

On the other hand it should be interesting.  Country scene, nice lookout, nice trees (colourful) or bushes are all great.  More modern things like a nice mirrored building or wall, some sort of neat machinery, old cars, aircraft and so on are also good.

Privacy

While it doesn't have to be completely away from everything, we should all remember that Dan may come along.  We do need to shield regular folks from exposure.

Actually, it's more of a nuisance, inconvenience factor on both sides.  We don't want to get into a spot where we can get a nice pic, but have to block traffic, or have a lot of ooglers (is that a word?) in the way.  I know people would be very upset to have some semi-clothed lady throw herself across their car.  Roll Eyes

On second thought if you know of any persons that may do that you should bring them along.

Light

If you know of a good spot, consider the lighting. Is it great at 10AM and crappy at 4PM?  Timing is important.

I know that no one will answer this, but it isn't any worse that hearing people talk about their 'turbo envy' problems or how some Americans feel so inadequate.   Cool

Carry on....

so obviously you want to see if anyone is reading this LOL...... Wink
YES - LIGHTING is EVERYthing!!!
some of the best pix are taken with 'dramatic' lighting; ie either early or late in the day. Both times give different qualities.  So aside from a select few, that means LATE in the day, right?   Roll Eyes
Those beautiful pix you may have seen are taken either with a HUGE (like KINGSIZE) bed sheet type light reflector (beside or 'all around' the camera' that will help show detail and even out the lighting levels.  A flash on the camera will help too, but typically they are automatically controlled and read all light levels and so probably are too weak to provide much fill.
If you have access to a good ole manual flash (the bigger the better!) or even two, they can be used with better results as they won't be the new-fangled thyristor, etc types that shut themselves down when they see enough light coming back etc etc etc.  Way back in a previous life I spent a couple of years taking photog so I learned a FEW - only a few - things... (you notice I am not working as a photographer.....  Roll Eyes )
Anyway
all that being said, I think Gary is right; we could prob come up with about 3 or 4 really good spots and get setup for that.  I MIGHT have a flash setup that could help out: 2 or 3 manual flashes MAYBE with an electronic eye that will trigger them remotely (have to find that too!).  I am sure a bunch of people here can come up with some really good suggestions and then check them out.  Maybe we can find out what the hourly modelling rate is for the waitresses from one of the meeting places..... Wink  ...ok ok.
Doing a setup like that takes time and coordination and would work well for a nice group shot, so everyone should start thinking about possible locations.  Most likely we will want it to be into the spring enough that there are buds on the trees etc and the grass isn't dead and brown and so on.

So here is a suggestion for a place:
The self-proclaimed "Lilac capital of Ontario or Canada or the World" or something is Franktown; directly west of Richmond about 10-15 (?) minutes.  The lilac bushes are out in full bloom (again IIRC) BEFORE the May long wknd.  Grass is green by then, salt is well washed off the roads and it gives people time to get their cars ready.  I suspect we could find a couple of good sites there.
Ashton is on the way (sort of) and it has some nice old buildings (I think?) that might provide a nice backdrop.  Maybe there is a riding stable out there somewhere that would be a third possibility; nice horsey environment.  I was surprised how cooperative and willing people were when they were asked politely to 'use their places/props'.  So ask and ye might receive!!!  It works!

An industrial site ie with a quarry and a big earth mover as a backdrop (don't shoot a yellow car, tho! LOL) might interest someone; get thinking outside the box a bit!  Maybe Champlain overlook in the Gats; but timing/lighting will be CRITICAL there for the best possible shot;
A fire hall but you prob need to know the local volunteers for that kind of cooperation;
Etc etc etc.
Maybe a group shot at the racetrack?
lots of places.
NEXT?

I have a great back drop only ten minutes from my house, its called lake Ontario. Lots of beaches including sand banks and sand dunes are also near by. Will show off the pictures once spring arrives and I take them. Dan

We don't really need lots of high tech equipment.  It's kind of like the monkeys and typewriters, enough of us with a camera each have to take a couple of good pics.   Afro

Here are a couple of my car before some idiot wrecked it.... bastard!!!!  Embarrassed

I'd have to go exploring to find it again, but one of the back roads near home (a bit nw of Clayton I think) has an open-pit quartz mine just off of it.  I stumbled across it last summer on my way home from some two-wheeled therapy in the Black Donalds.  It could make an outstanding backdrop if the lighting was right.

Road as all hard-packed dirt though.  Me thinks anyone interested might want to wait until spring has sprung & the runoff has ran before thinking about going up there for photos though.  Unless of course you know someone with a portable car wash.  Wink

As a matter of fact I think there might be a dormant member with one of those.

More food for thought...

If we can come to a consensus regarding where & when, I have a friend who's in to photography as a hobby who'd be willing to do a shoot for us.  For free even; it's something he does for no other reason than because he enjoys doing it.

I've seen an album or two of stuff he's done--very nice.  He has a good eye for things if you ask me.

If I get his ok, I'll post a link to one of his albums so that the rest of you can form your own opinions.

I don’t think your talking about me, but I did take a couple photography courses.  No 35mm though.  I do have a couple digitals but they don’t allow for too much manual adjusting.

I know of a number of excellent spots, but unfortunately they are all in Labrador ... but if anyone is up for a road trip  Grin Cheesy

Which kind of spots are we after mostly... group shots or singles?

It isn't anyone from our group--it's someone I met a while back on a group motorcycle ride.

Anywho, for those who are interested, this link should take you to a gallery of photos he did in Gatineau Park.  You can get to a few more galleries with the links at the top of the page.

The dam at Manic-5 would definitely be nice, but I doubt many people would be up for the day-and-a-half drive to get there.  OTOH the road out of Baie Comeau would be well worth it though.   Evil
