I have seen weights all over the place, but a search on PFF gives SO many results that it is kind of pointless, to be honest.  I don't have any more time to go thru 1,000 results than to read all of Pennocks.

I DO remember reading that ONE of the 84 models - an SE, maybe? - was the lightest one ever made.  How many different models were made in 84, anyway?  IIRC there was a several hundred pound difference; I was quite surprised!  Does anyone know for sure?

Did they ALL have sunroofs and if not, does that add or subtract weight?

Auto or std doesn't make a diff to me as the deep down idea here is to get the lightest car they made and do a really light alum 4 cyl swap into that for a fun daily driver.  (Still thinking about that Honda H22A - yeah; boo/hiss - complete drop-in a bit); or maybe one of the quads or a newer ecotech; who knows.

Just a thought and some questions. Hey, suddenly 84's are more attractive!

3 models made in 84 I think, a base coup a sport coup and a SE, the lightest would have been the base coup with a manual tranny and NO options..

thx Rob
hmmmm
I was pretty sure I saw the SE described as the light one but I have no idea why or what would make it that way. So I am thinking now of what BODY options it would have - and again I simply am not familiar enough with that model yr to know what may or may not be avail.
So just from a logic point of view; I am not concerned about the engine or trans; that whole package would get removed so they are not an issue.  It is internal, interior and body-type features that are the concern.  The 84's are all 4 bangers so no variance there, I expect.  (Maybe the SE never had A/C??? just a WAG)
No A/C - that would eliminate the condenser and evap coil in the dash and some controls;
power accessories: I expect they ALL had power windows; I can't remember seeing manual anywhere ever; geez; what else could be "trimmed"?  There ISN"T a lot, is there?!?!
Rear window defrost; the weight of the heater wire and the relays..... Shocked
No wing or body stuff but I don't think any of the 84s had anything anyway?

Ideas anyone; what would make one 84 lighter than another?

The SE's were the top line fieros in '84.. The Base coup with steel wheels, no ac, or power options would be the lightest.

I am guessing there is little in the power options area; aside from A/C, what other stuff could be deleted that would really save much?

Just want to chase this idea down a bit; I don't see A/C and can live without it. What about a sunroof I wonder; I assume the base model DOESN"T have it.....? (when did T roofs make their appearance?)

Are you going to do anything to it to make it lighter or are you looking for stock only weights.

Your only limitations are set from within, by a lack of vision.  But to have vision alone leaves the process idle.  Ergo, without action your thoughts are worthless.

I would think the sunroof would probley add some weight.. the glass is heavier then the fiberglass and with all the hinges.. power options like power windows and power doorlocks add weight.. you could look for a car without rear defrost.. that would probley save a 100th of a pound or so..  t tops would add a lot of weight.. with the frames and glass.. plus I would assume you are making a racing car? it would add to the amount of chassis flex..

right now I am just curious about the lightest model; thinking it would be a good starting point PLUS the fact that it was an 84 and so would be CHEAP.......

I understand the 'framing' for the sunroof is in every car? It is just a matter of how it is 'finished'?

I am just doing a bit of dreaming, really. Last time in toronto I went into one of those "JDM" engine warehouses and had a good look at a complete Prelude H22A with 5 spd and ECM and harness all for $2500.   Swap it in as a package. Rotation doesn't matter then.  All aluminum, solid and reliable and 200hp bone stock. THAT would be a blast, combined with the light weight; and some decent suspension and good tires and wheels and you would have a very fun machine.

I THINK the weights I saw tossed around for the 84 was in the 2400 range. Subtract the weight of the iron duke and tranny and add the weight of the H22A and what would that give you?  Even BETTER.  And about $3K involved...? maybe?

Like I said, just dreaming.

You are playing with words.  All the coupes have the same underbody and are slightly lighter than the GT fastbacks.  The difference in weight is all in options (power equip and wing), wheels/tires, and engine/tranny.  You don't care about engine and don't want options.  I assume you will choose your own wheels, so therefore they are all the same (within a slight amount).

Once you lose a/c, sunroof glass, and power options, you are tearing out regular things to lose weight.  Carpet, doors, deck lid, lights......   Roll Eyes
