Carbon fiber hood, trunk ect.

Hey guys!
someone had mentioned here that they can work with carbon fiber. I don't who it was, be maybe that person can guide me in the right direction.

Many people are asking about a carbon fiber hood. What I was thinking was to get a hood from the salvage yard, use it as a mold and lay some carbon on it. Then after some sanding priming ect, endup with a light yet stron hood.

Any inputs? were can i get carbon fiber?

The hood is already plastic.  A carbon fibre one would be lighter if you don't do an inner ribbed hood (strengthener). But then you could just seperate the existing parts.  Big bucks for little gain unless for all out racing or show.

Not for a Fiero application. Probably for a J-body. I just want to make them and sell em'

Wearing my wet blanket like a Roman centurion's robe. I have to say that there is a whole lot more work to making a replacement hood than you've described.
The "hood you'd end up with would be lumpy on the outside & smooth on the inside & have no way of attaching to the car. The resins used in carbon fibre & fibreglass work are messy, smelly and toxic.
If you're serious about working in any fibre-reinforced plastic, hit the local library for books on the subject. Then practice with fibreglass before you head for carbon fibre.

re: carbon fiber - I was in the Fiero Shop and they had a really neat looking carbon fiber hood for ........SOMEthing.........
and I looked at it for a while and admired it, and the smooth glossy finish and workmanship ... and then started thinking how the colour might look like dark gray primer from about 50 metres.   Maybe like it was an unfinished body part?  As soon as you paint it to match of course, the effect is gone, so you have to go with ....... a complete body of carbon fiber?
I guess I would have to see one on a car to picture it as a part of a package.

haha! no, i don't want to produce the carbon hood that doesn't match the car. i think that looks stupid. I feel confident that I can just lay the fibe over an existing hood and then apply the resin. You are right that the hood will be lumpy and unfinished. that's when the labour comes in.  sand, prime ect and then paint to match car. so you have a practical lighter hood.

this will probably be for J and F body applications. the Fiero would not really benefit from this.

As for mounting hardware. You take off the skeloton from the donor hood an rivit it to the carbon hood. (then hid rivets with filler, primer ect..

I'll look into getting the carbon in rolls, also I'm working on pricing for those who want to the battery re-locate.
