Wether the key is in the car or not, when you push on the brakes do your console lights turn on? (84 2m4) Just wondering if its supposed to do that or if I have something weird going on.

Ha!  Had the very same thing happen in my now-retired '86 2M4.

Other amusing symptoms:
  • reverse gear + foot on brake + turn key from on to off = engine still running until taken out of reverse or brake pedal released.  Startled the hell out of me the first time it happend after backing in to a parking spot.  Grin
  • no side marker or front/rear running lights
The cause?  Lost a ground somewhere near the RR wheel well IIRC.
