Thanks to Don Guy, I'm back with a working computer.  He very nicely got mine back together after an 'owner upgrade' explosion.

However, I do have an issue with IE that I just seem to have picked up.  I don't think I did anything to cause this and it worked okay for half a day.

It won't open a link if it goes to a new window.  It will open a blank window with no data, other than the IE 'outline'.

It will operate a link that replaces the original window.

Anyone got an idea?Huh?  Sure is a pain.

Reload Windows. Sad  or if you are luck, take the explorer update on the windows update site.

It doesn't want to d/l the update from 5.5 to 6.  Seems not to like the installer program or something.

I DID make a CD of my C: drive with just the basics on it, before I started adding stuff.  Will it work (or damage anything) to delete the IE folder in 'Program Files' and then use the backup copy in it's place?  It did seem to work properly at the time I made the copy.

I hope building my Fiero is easier than this....  Roll Eyes

Ahhh shite.  One of the Win98 security updates that I applied to it can on occasion hose a component that the Windows Update site actually needs.  I may have forgotten to fix the fix.  Roll Eyes

Open a command prompt, and enter the following:

C:  [enter]
cd \Windows\System  [enter]
regsvr32 jscript.dll  [enter]

After this last step you should see  a dialog box pop up that says "DllRegisterServer in jscript.dll succeeded."  Hit "ok," reboot, and try the update site again.

HUH?HuhHuhHuh

Okay, I'll try that.  My idea above didn't work anyway.

The problem is that although the 500k update install program d/l okay, when I try to run it, no go.  It says something like a file or location can't be found or accessed.

It did work for a while, Don  Grin

Ahh ok, I misunderstood.  I thought it was the update site which wasn't working, not the update intself.

Not sure why the update won't go, but I did find a few articles about what to try when opening links in a new page starts failing.  They're reasonably technical, but no more so than what I suggested trying yesterday.

Would you like me to send you the articles, or would you prefer a house call?  Smiley

Thanks for the info Don.  Of course things are not straight forward.  Grin

The update says the address is corrupt and I need to clean out the cache (?  Cry ) and try the download again.  It seemingly is not able to find Microsoft's site.....  Lips Sealed

There are more issues than that as it seems to affect programs in the tray (by clock).  The icon for the internet connection disappears somewhere although still connected. yada yada....

I have d/l both Mozilla and Avant browsers.  The Avant is a bit odd but seems to work well.  Mozilla looks nice but is slower than sh*t!!!!!!.

I still haven't tried reinstalling windows (I remember where that got me), but may if I get energetic.

Open Internet Exploder, and go to Tools->Internet Options.  On the General tab, there should be a "Delete Files..." button in a section for Temporary Internet Files.  Hit that button, and try again.  If it truly is a cache problem that will theoretically take care of it.

...more coming in a P.M.
