Godfather just called....bad news  Cry

Taking Nicholas on ramp, he got rear ended, pushed over the divider, 360'd, and hit again twice.  I won't be able to look at the car till maybe tomorrow evening.  It drives but its bent up bad, he was impressed how well it took what it did, anyways....is there a decent garage near Ottawa South somewhere where he can take it for an estimate?  He's near the corner of Bank and Albion.  I need to let him know tonite if possible.

Thanks!

Ottawa, ON
K1B 4E4
Phone: (613)746-5128

Owner's name is Khaleed, and I assume it's in the east end from the phone number.

He had the car appraised for $7000, but the broker lost the paperwork.  Their giving him $4900 for it and the buy back option.  He's pressed them hard for a week now and they won't even give the Fiero to him (they did loose the paperwork).  Not sure how far he would get getting it appraised now but whatever.  So its come down to this, they don't want to repair the car, lack of parts they say and even telling them where to find it all they still wouldn't budge.  They either total and take the car, unless I place a lein on it, but that would ruin my godfathers credit history, or we buy back for $500.  Seeing how they originally wanted $1000, I think $500 is safe enough, even if its not worth fixing, sell the car for parts....it is a fastback after all!  Unless someone has a beater fiero we can swap vins with and give them the shit...opps did I type that out-loud Roll Eyes

I've taken some photos, feel free to take a look and tell me what you think.  The frame looks as if the entire passenger side was pushed back.  Nothing a truck, some heavy chain and a running start can't fix.  I have a photo of the passenger door, and with all my weight on it, I'm not a heavy guy but thats as open as it'll get.  Front passenger headlight area was pushed in, where the hood hinges mount, the steel work was bent back and off to the passenger side as well.  Underbody looked intact, looks like the sway bar frame mounts both took a good blow and saved the cradle.  Other than a fender, gfx, wheel well liner, rear passenger tail light, and possibly a front and maybe rear fascia.....its doable.  Like a buddy said, its amazing what a 20lb sledge will do along with some tallent  Grin  Worst case, get out the sawz'all and cut the whole front off, find a nice donor, weld it back on and shes golden!  I'm heading over there today, apparently it drives the same, but I doubt thats true...find out for myself and lyk.

Modem users lookout, these pictures arn't small.

He can get more coin then that!

I know an appriser that will take a look at the over all condition of the car with damage ignored. He will also give them a scrap value of the car as it sits for parts.

he should be able to walk away with at least 7K

I'll get the info tonight, they guy is out near navan area..

Cheers!

Sadly, they won't willingly help you out.  The pr*ck I had as an adjuster had my van taken to the wreckers and then refused to release the cheque until I drove to the wrecker's, retrieved the paperwork and delivered it to him or the broker.

After repeatedly asking by phone whether he wanted the police to charge him, or the wrecker with theft, (which one huh?) he decided I could sign a copied waiver.

Since my van was not where I parked it and I got no money and didn't ask it to be taken, I figured it was stolen.

I think the part where I said I'd be at the broker in an hour and if it wasn't ready, i'd be slightly pissed got him.  I'd already tried to get him thru the phone, so I don't think he wanted to see me really pissed.

The girl at the broker said he asked if I might track him down (she thought he was a bit paranoid).

Back to the GT  Grin

Would there be a chance that the original appraiser kept a copy for himself?  Or a copy maybe went to head office?  Sounds fishy. I can't imagine how they would decide what the premium should be.  Maybe they can go back and refund money as it's not worth the 7k they charged him for.

Eric is right, a decent appraiser will work around the obvious damage to get an honest look at it's value before the accident.

It doesn't look too bad, and for 500.00 it's a deal.  Obviously if they up the value and the buyout it still may net more than 4400.00.

Even if it needs a new subframe, it would be a nice project .  Shoot, looks a lot better than mine.  Grin

I wouldn't worry about the VIN as it won't ever be worth anything as a collector's car.  But that's just me.

Too late, we all know how pushy insurance companies are, and how they like to close the deal.  My godfather isn't the type to put up a big fight, so basically he still has the Fiero but after all the BS he's left with $3100.  Their in it to take your sweat and blood, and provide you with nothing when you need it.  Find a jar, and throw your hard earned money there instead.....this country stinks!  We live in nothing but a brain washed f*cked up society, where day-in and day-out, we work like bees collecting and making honey, only to have to give it up, and are left with so little time to enjoy life.

Anyways, have to figure out what to do with this thing.  I don't want to see it parted, I've put too much of my time and parts into that car to let it go that easy.  But on the other hand, I still have money owing for what parts (not counting labour!) that are still on the car, about $800 worth.  So either I go part it out for whats mine, or its sent my way as a whole.  I'll see tomorrow, but it has to go and he needs money for it.  Also he just bought 2 brand new fastback windows from the dealer about three weeks ago...those alone were $600'ish plus tax!  These are still new in box, 100% originals, anyone interested lmk, it will be probably $600 for the pair if he can't return them.

Now I need to ask myself, do I need another project car?  Those that know me would say sure, whats yet another right.  Well, I'm not sure.  Its fixable, heck anything is, but on a scale with the frame issue, I'd give it a 5 out of 10.  It did move and needs to be moved back.  I'll have to put some thought into this.  Can something be worth so much effort when it really isn't worth it.....

I would have to agree insurance company's are crooked and will rip you off every chance they get.
My recomendation would to be find another shell to use, one that is straight. Build one car out of the two and you are back in business. Problem is cost of straightening car would be very high, higher than cost of a donor shell. Problem two is that the vin tags are now worthless no matter the value or rarety of the car it will now have salvage on the ownership which seriously lowers the finished value of the car. If you want I can start searching the area down here for a donor for you. ++++

I think that GT needs to pass along it's Soul to the Indy. Smiley

So this past Saturday I managed to get a hold of a trailer and after work, in the middle of that snowfall, hauled that little red thing home.  Sunday morning I inspected the frame further, and well...its somewhat squished.  Repairable but easier and cheaper to swap out for a good donor.  Not sure at this point, I don't have the time or money to put into it but I still wouldn't mind rebuilding that car.  Undecided  Anyone have any leads on a bare frame, it doesn't need to have any suspension components either.  As long as its rust free, it should do.  But at this point, I'll take anything that will work!

Who says these little cars arn't addictive...  Grin

Good for you, Nick!

I guess I should mention that we now temporarily have a 'club use' car dolly. Many thanks to Brian Welton.  No plate or lights  Roll Eyes  but the rest is functional.

The 85 I got seems to have a good space frame.  I really haven't taken it apart  Grin but it has a rusty trunk side and a nice battery area (go figure).

I don't know what to do with it but may consider a trade for something (car, parts, or expertise)
