in the passenger rear wheel well.   up against the passenger seat area.  its a steel bladder the size if a army canteen.  it has two small hosses going into it.  anyone know what this is?  i could get a pic if i need to.  just wonderin if i can rip it out.  thanks

I'm curious too...  I remember noticing it on aaron88's car at one point, but I was too busy appreciating the N* tucked in to that engine compartment to remember to ask him.   Roll Eyes

The lines one is from fuel tank vent line other feeds to charcoal cannister I believe it is for polution control thus unnecessary and fully removeable if you want to strip rear body of car to reach upper bolts. Recomend just leaving and removing lines feeding if it you don't like it.

Interesting...  any idea when Pontiac started adding it?

I don't remember seeing it on my '86 Duke when I stripped it down to a skeleton.  Sacha's '84 doesn't have it, and my caffeine-deprived brain is 90% certain that my '85 2.8 doesn't have it either.

I know this ugly I mean perty little yellow 88 has one seems it is no longer hooked up for some reason anymore

This charcoal box works with the vacuum system to neutralize the odours and fumes from the gas tank.  Your gas tank must be open to the atmosphere somewhere so that air can move in and out with changes in temperature and fuel levels.

I have disconnected this box and added my own vent that is much lighter.  However the box in my case cannot be removed until the body panels are taken off that cover it.  There are two screws that I can’t get to until this is done.

my 85 gt and my 86 gt don't have that.. Huh are you sure it's the passenger side?? only think I can think of is the evap canister, but that is on the driver's side..

On Brian's 88 it is in the passengers wheel well hidden above plastic shielding as I said before it is up high and bolts out of reach without stripping panels for access. It is a sealed unit with the fuel tank vent line feeding into it and then out of it to the charcoal cannister mounted on the driver's side. On Brian's I am disconnecting the lines from it and feeding a newer style cannister instead. I will install the cannister out of the car his engine came from. The metal where the battery tray was roughted so when rebuilding that area a shelf to bolt the ign module to was added which will leave room at this location for the new cannister making more room on the driver's side for other things. I just happened to catch a thread on PFF which explains what this thing is.  No wonder I couldn't find it on any of the '84 through '86s that I've had my hands on--it was only in the '88s, and possibly in the '87s as well.
