So I'm going on a Diet.

there are so many out there, anyone have or heard of someone having good result with one in perticular?

I don't like the atkins diet. no carbs = no brain function.
Dr. Berinsteen is way to expensive, and not a big fan of needles.

any ideas?

cheers!
Eric

Different diets work for different people.  That being said, Atkins is working for me.  I started just after the new year, and now I'm holding at slightly less than I weighed when I graduated high school.

The only brutal part of it was the first week.  You end up going through carbohydrate withdrawl.  Think of a pack-a-day smoker, going cold turkey.   Roll Eyes  It wasn't very much fun for those few days, but once you get past that initial lurch...

Not sure what you mean by "no brain function."  I've been as normal as I ever am (and that's admittedly not saying much) with the exception of that first week.  Lots of info at http://atkins.com/canada/index.html if you haven't given it a read already.

Well Don's right not every "diet" will work for everyone.  It's a matter of finding what will work for you.  I've tried dozens of them over the years and from everything I've tried the only thing that really seems to work is exercising.

I'm doing the atkins thing at the moment with Don and well, it's working wonders for him, it's not doing much for me.  I have the metabolism of a slug so my body doesn't like to let go of it's stored fat.  very frustrating!!  The atkins thing seems to work best for men to be honest.  I've read a number of articles that confirm that it works best for men.  It does work for some women, but I ain't one of them.

I do have a suggestion for you at the moment while you are deciding what path you want to follow.  For a week keep a journal of what you eat.  Don't change your eating habits for that week just because you are writing it down.  At the end of the week look back at what you ate.  You should see when you tend to eat not so great choices, and you can figure out ways to change your habits.  An easy way to change your eating habits is to try to cut back or cut out if you can in between meal snacking.  At least change what you snack on... instead of snacking on chips or a chocolate bar, have some celery sticks or some carrots handy.

A big thing that helps is getting out and walking.  After dinner instead of taking a seat in front of the TV, grab your wife and go out for a walk.  It doesn't have to be a long walk, just getting into the habit of going out for a walk will help.

Anyway..... figuring out what will work best for you and fit into your lifestyle is very important.  Because if it is too hard to follow chances are you wont stick to it and you wont see the results you want.  The big thing to remember is you are not going on a "diet" short term, you are trying to change your habits so you don't end up coming back to the point you are at now in the future.

Geesh I think it's time for me to stop typing... I'm starting to sound like a health nut  Shocked eek

Hope some of what I wrote is helpful... good luck

A diet is only eating one slice of the pizza and not the WHOLE thing at one time.

Eat less and work more. It's as simple as that!
Ya right.

Do not read this if you are easily offended.

I have been on many diets in my life, but I must admit that they were for entirely different reasons.  I was a high performance middle distance runner back in my high school days.  Quite good actually, ranked 17th in Ontario in 1993.  But anyway, the reason I was on many different diets was because I was in search of the highest performance diet, one that would let me perform the best.  I found that on most diets it was very hard for me to maintain my boy weight.  I kept losing weight because I couldn’t maintain my minimum 7500 calories a day on my poor little 147 lb frame.

So now that, that is out of the way I also have to say that because my diet was so different than what you are talking about here you will have to interpret it.

The best diet that I was on (by far) was a variation of the high fat diet, originally developed in 50’s for high performance and endurance athletes and kept secret by high level coaches.  This diet allowed me to completely control my weight and gave me by far more energy than any other diet I have ever tried.  I was on what can be described as the Atkins Diet for five days a week and a high carbohydrate diet for the other two days a week.  It gets very long to describe why, so I’m not going to get into it.  This diet comes with a disclaimer (and for good reason).  You must get 30 minutes of exercise over 75% hear rate at least three times a week, or else you will not be burning enough calories to control the diet.  This goes for most diets as well.

Since those days of the high performance Aaron I have since retired.  So needless to say I don’t feel the need to be on such a highly restrictive diet anymore.  So here’s the part that no one likes to hear.  As long as you are getting your heart rate up over 75% at least three times a week for over half an hour.  You can completely control your weight.  But you must change your metabolism and you must increase your muscle mass.

Non exercise diets are far more common because they don’t include as much apparent work, and people are generally unwilling to put the amount of effort into things that is required.  A good reason that people are unsuccessful with their diets is that they don’t realize from the get go how long a commitment they are making.  For example; if you are trying to loose 50 lb it’s going to take you between one and two years to do.  You will then have to change your lifestyle for as long as you want to keep the weight off.  That means forever.  Given the commitment to this kind of diet it is actually less work to exercise, but people don’t get it, and don’t generally care enough to do it.

Any diet that does not include exercise is a starvation diet.  It works only if your body is okay with it.  Everyone’s body will react differently to non exercise diets.  You are going to have to keep trying until you find something that works for you.

Women have a much harder time on any diet because of the difference in muscle mass.  Without the muscle mass the body simply does not need the extra calories and will store them.  I don’t know anything about dieting for women.  Sorry.

Something else that can be said for any successful diet is, eat as often as possible without eating as much as you did before.

Before people start thinking that I’m still 147 lb I’ll also add this.  Much has happened since high school and I have decided on a more muscular frame and a weight of 155 to 165 lb, depending of course, on what sport I’m currently pursuing for fun.  I also now eat whatever I feel like, but also deversify the kind of food I eat to make sure my body gets what it needs.  My weight is entirly controled by exersize now that I don't have to worry about performance.

well put as always Aaron  Smiley

There is definitely no true quick fix when it comes to loosing weight.  Well there's always surgery... but that's just a temporary fix if you stick to your old eating/exercising habits.

It's a mater of finding what works for your body type, and what you can live with.
