My 84 2m4 coolant fan is hardwired directly into the passenger copartment near the fuse box--but there the male end simply hangs down! (Sorry) What do I plug it into to? The fuse box offers me ign, pwr acc, batt--I am told I need a 20 amp slot but none of these are marked with # amps.

Hmmm...  if a former owner did that, I'm guessing that a component in the circuit which normally switches the fan on/off as required failed.  My personal preference would be to locate the problem in the original circuit and repair it instead of band-aiding, but it's your car not mine.  :-)

The ideal "band aid" repair would be to have the fan run whenever the key is "on", but not when in acc or off.  I can't remember if the ignition take-off on the fuse panel is fused or not, and if fused what it's rated for.  Unfortunately the fuse panel diagram I have doesn't appear to list any of those take-offs either.

Unless you can find this out, your safest bet would be to pick up a generic relay from your favorite automotive store, and use the IGN terminal on the fuse panel to energize the relay.  Run a (20A) fused line from one of the BATT terminals to the switched side of the relay, and connect your fan wire to the "other side" of the relay's switch.
