the book says this must be removed as a hole and replaced with the control arm I think... is there another way of pulling this out??

Your book is mostly correct, with respect to the average backyard mechanic.

The front lower ball joints are pressed in to the control arm, and sometimes tack-welded in as an extra safety measure.  If you don't have access to the appropriate press, doing the job properly will be damn-near impossible.

Assuming that you're comfortable doing it, purchase a replacment ball joint at your favorite parts store, remove the control arm, then take both in to a shop and ask them to replace the ball joint for you.  When I had one replaced earlier this year, it wasn't more than $20 to have a local garage swap the ball joints after I removed the control arm.
