Your book is mostly correct, with respect to the average backyard mechanic.
The front lower ball joints are pressed in to the control arm, and sometimes tack-welded in as an extra safety measure. If you don't have access to the appropriate press, doing the job properly will be damn-near impossible.
Assuming that you're comfortable doing it, purchase a replacment ball joint at your favorite parts store, remove the control arm, then take both in to a shop and ask them to replace the ball joint for you. When I
had one replaced earlier this year, it wasn't more than $20 to have a local garage swap the ball joints after I removed the control arm.
