I don't have a 282 but I am curious.  Sometime ago I stumbled across an article on rebuilding a 282 for racing and/or heavy duty use; it included things like welding in bits of aluminum into specific places on the casing etc etc.  I didn't copy it or pay special attention to it as I don't have one.
Has ANYone seen this and/or copied it?  I would like to go thru it to see if any of it applies to the 284 somehow.  Some ideas might even be 'generic' in nature and apply to the Isuzu or Muncie 4 spds.

I am thinking about getting a 'scrap' 284 and maybe a scrap 282 trans as well to take apart and compare; there is a fair bit of info on the 282 but NADA on the 284 so I am going to see if anything regarding the 282 is 'generic' enough to use on the 284.  Wish I could find an LSD tho!!

Now, in case anyone is reading this, Getrag builds trannys for ALL kinds of cars; BMW's etc included; so if I can find a LARGE, heavy duty FWD european car of the 92 vintage I might look into that for parts or comparison.  Anyone have any ideas of ANY cars at all that meet that description?

My main goal is to strengthen it to take abuse and to find an LSD that will fit the 284.

I believe the only FWD car BMW has Built is the Mini , and I can tell you as an owner My Cooper has gone though 3 trannies in 40K , There weak.

As for other stronger FWD trannies, it's not the tranny thats the issue , it's the bolt pattern. Even the Getrag Found in the Saab 9-3 (ARC , Aero) has a different bolt pattern. I have a Rubbing of the bellhousing and have tried to mate up a 2.8 Block to a Getrag 6spd FWD.

The New G6's FWD getrag 6spd is the only hope. Then they have been out for 2 years I will swap the 5spd on the northstar now for one as long as the bellhousing is similar.

actually all I hope to find is the biggest trans I can from a front or all-whl drive car; I don't intend to try to bolt it up to anything; I am just hoping that some internal parts will match the internals of the 284.  Since the 284's were made for only about 3 yrs; 91-93 incl; I am assuming they MIGHT have some parts from a similar or maybe a bit earlier trans (by Getrag).
So maybe cars from 88-93 ish......Huh  would qualify as 'likely' donors or parts sharers.

When I got my 89 Cavalier tranny for the northstar I had it Rebuilt by the same Gentleman who did our 911 tranny. I will find out exactly what he did to it. I do know that some webs were welded in and he did cross reference some parts with other GM 5spds. It wasn't cheap by any means. The next step is an external cooler with a pump. I want to see how it stands up before I go that far though. All In all I have about $1500 in the transmission.

all I am hoping for here is to figure out how or where I can build up my 284; I think the 282 is completely different to LOOK at but I will go thru the internals to find out.  Also, if there is ANY chance of finding an LSD that will work on the 284 then I will be HAPPY......

where is this guy who did the rebuild?  Not sure where you are writing in from.....
Do you have any documentation on the work done?  I wish I wish I had copied down that info I saw.......  but I wasn't planning on using a 282 so didn't really pay that much attention.

From what I hear on PFF it’s always the differential that goes.  So just don’t spin the tires too much.  I spin mine all the time but I’m trying to find out how long it’ll last that way.

well I found out a few interesting things.....
yes Aaron, you will find out.  The torque you are putting thru it should be a real test.
My 284 trans is identified at GM as a 'non-service' item.
You break it, you replace it.  The WHOLE thing.  !?!?!??   Shocked  Shocked  Shocked
But they suggested I call a few trans places, too, which I did.  The first place I called said they COULD fix it and even went to a suppllier book and got part numbers prices and everything, so that is a bit of a relief.  Sounds like, IF the gears themselves are in good shape, that a GOOD rebuild is in the $700 range.  So that is livable as long as you don't have to do that each year.
And as of this writing I think I now have 2 complete trannies, so hopefully ONE is going to last.
So that is all the thought I am going to give to them for now.  The only trans sort of thing I am going to do is put in a new clutch.  What clutch have you used Aaron and Sandy (and anyone else who has a bigger motor)? and what do you think of it?

The main problem with differentials is they should use gear oil not tranny fluid or engine oil in them. When the gears are spinning way too fast fluid won't stick to them so they go dry and boom game over. Dan

That is exactly the comment that a few of the gurus of fieros on the various forums has said; that it is revs that wrecks them (the 282 was mentioned specifically) saying that much more than 6000 rpm was asking for trouble.
