I was just reading an article on the old Jag XJ 13 a mid engine v-12 hoped to reclaim LeMans glory in the mid sixties.
There's a pic of a twisted pile of scrap, and this tale. The car was out of retirement for a film about it's development. The film maker suggested some high speed laps would be great for the finish. The driver says he was doing 140MPH and the passenger rear wheel disintegrated (old mag wheel not inspected). "As I was not wearing belts (crazy bastard) and I realized the cowl was very strong, I dove into the footwell and rode it out. 3 end over end rolls and 4 or 5 side ways rolls." Someone has a guardian angel.
407 KPH....not today thanks. (where's that chicken smilie?)
