The "easier to read" argument of analog vs. digital is a subjective one. Personally I prefer a numeric readout for speed & distance, with scaled displays for everything else.
No arguments on the red though... I've always found that the higher the frequency of the light used, the harder it is on the eyes when viewed in dim lighting.
Every now and then I think about fitting one or more monochrome LCD dot matrix displays in to the instrument pod, backlighting them with red LEDs, and using microcontrollers to drive them. It's not very high on the priority list however.
