when i drive my fiero for over 20-30 min especially on highways where my rpm gets above 2000 rpm my car starts to cut out and bog down like im not getting gas but will idle fine at 1000rpm. i did a fuel pressure test and when i turn the key with engine off no pressure is read but when i start the car it reads 36psi at idle and when i turn off the pressure goes back down to 0psi. im not sure if there is something wrong with the fuel pump/wireing or the regulator or a leak in the line... im not smelling any gas and doesnt seem to be loosing gas so i dont think there is a leak. also i just replaced the filter. any help with this would be awesome   Afro

Well for one thing, no fuel pressure with key on/engine off ain't right.  When you turn the key on but not to start, do you hear the fuel pump run for 2-3 seconds?

Assuming no leaking injectors or fuel leaks elsewhere, the system should hold pressure for 30 minutes or more after shut down.  If it's bleeding down to zero almost immediately, you're losing line pressure somewhere.  Either an injector, a leaking fitting or line which you haven't found yet, or backward through the fuel pump in to the tank.

Can you make it out to the GTG tomorrow?  Nothing like on-the-spot troubleshooting...  Smiley

He be in the U and S of EH?...........................

It does sound like a pump problem.  You should hear it run when you turn the key to on.  The pressure should build and be ready to start the car.  If you can't see or smell any leaks, it does sound like the pressure is bleeding in the tank at the pump.

One spot is a rubber tube that develops a rip or comes off, it may not be the actual pump.

Could also be the regulator, worn out.

If the old pump does run, you can unhook the fuel line and drain most of the gas via the pumping action.  This will help in lowering the tank which can be awkward if full of fuel.  Running the car is a longer, more boring version of this as well, but you may suck up some junk into the system.

BTW, change the fuel filter when you're done, just in case it is the original problem.   Embarrassed
