anyone ever think about just cutting the stock shifter down and putting a aftermarket knob on top? i hate how long the shifter is and cant afford a new one right now

Yup. Some people even do it instead of just thinking about it.
You can also hunt down the shifter from a 84--they're certainly not stubby, but they're a drop-in which is shorter than the shifters from the other model years.

While it is not a true 'short' shifter, cutting the shaft does give a slightly shorter throw and is more comfortable (to me anyway). With the cables etc, the shift will always be a bit vague compared to having the shifter sprout from the tranny as in a front engine rwd.
Grind the shaft from the bottom shifter piece and weld on a new shaft. Either a cut Fiero one or from any car. The Fiero shaft is so thick that few knobs fit right on. You can use a slimmer shaft from an imprt and just spin on an aftermarket knob.

I have done a few 84's all I do is cut off the shaft where I want to and weld a bolt to it that will thread into the new shifter knob. Dan
