Road side inspections

A buddy was pulled over last night in Peterborough where the police and the MTO had a small inspection station set up. They went all over his truck checking every thing and stating the plates would be pulled if enough stuff is found.
All they found on his was the breather vent tube to the air filter was off so he got a warning that was recorded and told if he did not get it fixed his plates would be pulled the next time he gets checked.
Sounds pretty crazy but he said it was mostly older cars and pick up trucks that were getting waved into the inspection.
Has any one seen any of these checks going on else where as I can't see them just doing it in Peterborough. Dan

They do them sometimes in the bigger cities. In TO, they set up in a lot and funnel likely looking suspects to be checked. Mostly modified cars and muscle cars. Here it is mostly larger trucks that get pulled over, but I have seen pickups and motorhomes.
A breather is an open vented crankcase (no pcv) and violates the emission controls laws. It's about a 450.00 fine. A bunch of guys in TO got stung, mostly muscle cars, and rods.
It's common here to get just pulled over and checked for muffler, ebrake, etc by the police without the MTO crew.

Well it's good that they are cracking down on hot rod guys, because they usually use those cars as their daily drivers
Speaking of mods, Dan, what yeah was that 3100 from? I'm going to have to throw in a new alternator, was pretty sure it was a 91, but was too lazy to go grab the documentation you provided.

They spent almost an hour going over his truck inspecting every thing and did not stop looking till they found some thing.
With his truck it is an 87 Chev short box that has been fully rebuilt using a southern frame and box so the truck is mint and luckily for him when the rebuilt was done all the original emissions were kept or he would have been nailed pretty hard.
The 3100 came out of a 95 Grand Am GT but I am pretty sure I used the original V6 Fiero alt but can't remember for sure. Dan
