I am reading the Toronto Star Tuesday June 17th Section B1
"The entire engine can be replaced ...  New engine must be registered with transportation ministry."
Is this a new law, or is it that the reporter (Neco Cockburn) does know what he/she is talking about?

The only think I can see is the change in the vehicle permit. It has a place for "cyl" and "power". Can anyone shed some light on this. Do you have to register a 3.8 (2.8 6 vs. 3.8 6)

I think this is more for the Honda idiot who pulls a Civic motor and installs a Prelude motor or the Mustang guys with the 4cyl registered car with the V8 engine in  it. Mostly they would look for cyl # changes not a 2.8l V6 to a 3.8l V6.  But a 2.5l 4cyl to a V6 would nail us under such a law. Dan

Hmmm.. this came up at one of our cruise nights a few weeks back. Seems though this has been in effect for some time but know one bothers with it. People tell their insurance companies they did an engine swamp but I was told the DMV ( or another dept) needs to be told too with proof what vehicle the engine came out of. Something to do with vehicles being stolen and stripped for parts. Proof it came out of a legit vehicle and not a 5 finger discount.

From the MTO's web site:

Quote
Vehicle Description Changes
You must report a change or data correction for a registered vehicle within six days of the change. These changes include:

  • Colour
  • Body Type
  • Fuel Type (Power)
  • Number of Cylinders
  • Registered Gross Weight
  • Make, Model and/or Year
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
Bring your vehicle permit to any Driver & Vehicle Licence Issuing Office and complete an Application for Registration indicating the changes.

This implies that an engine swap to/from the same number of cylinders, does not need to be reported.

As for those taking the 4-6, 4-8, 6-8 leap, if you plan on registering the engine swap with the MTO the easiest route to take would be to phone your local licensing office to find out what documentation (if any) is required, rather than going on rumour and speculation.  Smiley
